This shot was taken at one of Durban's beaches. Some of the locals make these sand statues next to the pier. As you can see from the message they ask in a very polite manner for money. As the sand dries out, the statues disappear, and they constantly have to wet them to keep them in good condition. As these are all unemployed people, it is their way to earn money in an honest way and at least they don't loiter around and beg or rob innocent people, so the tourists are more than willing to pay to look at the artwork.

In case of emergency...............

This is part of the 'sunken ship' - the aquarium at Ushaka Marine World in Durban. It is not the restrooms - just part of the display!

Ushaka Marine World

Ushaka Marine World in Durban is a theme park which hosts an aquarium, dolphinarium and various swimming pools and waterways. The whole aquarium is underground and you enter through an old shipwreck. The whole aquarium resembles a sunken ship and they put in quite an effort to make it as real as possible.

Summer Vacation

Hi everybody, after an absence of two weeks I am back from the coast of the province of Kwazulu Natal where I spent part of my summer holiday. For the next week or so I will therefore post some pictures of the area where I spent the past two weeks. Today's shot was taken from the balcony of the flat where we stayed, Cabanas del Mar, at Winklespruit about 30 kms south of Durban. You can see a glimpse of the sea in the top left corner.
